Translation:
The Bernstein house
This house was built in 1883 by the Bernstein family. The descendants of the family lived in this house until 1992.
Reb Mordechai (Mottel) and Ada (Ecca) Bernstein (sister of David Shub) immigrated from Romania to Rosh Pina in 1882, and were among the founders of the colony. Mordechai was a farmer and one of the founders of the tobacco growers syndicate. He served as the head of colony’s committee and one of the founding fathers of the Jewish Shalom courthouse, the first in Israel. During the British mandate he served as a judge. Additionally, he served as the first cantor in the colony.
Yehuda, son of reb Mordechai, was a farmer and a public figure, served as the first mayor of the small town. Yehuda was awarded “the fighters of the state” decoration, and together with his wife Neomi nee Weidenfeld, an activist and the head the town’s branch of Ha'aguda Lema'an Hachayal organization (an organization that helps soldiers), they kept the tradition of volunteering and helping the public.
The house served for years as the place of debating on the future of the colony and the country, and was the meeting place where important decisions were made regarding laws and lands.
Yehuda an Neomi Bernstein, important figures in Rosh Pina, raised three daughters in this old house – Ada (kadatz), Geula (Zacai), and Nechama/Chumik (Chefetz).
